I was reading the latest issue of Essence Magazine (which by the way has some of the best interviews and advice out there for women in business) and I came across an article featuring the sultry Erykah Badu. I have had a HUGE girl crush on her since Baduizm released in 1997- I love her stellar beauty, her vivid lyrics, her honey voice, and her bold colorful style. So imagine my surprise when the opening paragraph referenced her “booty beauty” in her video for “Window Seat”- where the HELL was I and how did I miss this shit? I ran to the computer and sat mesmerized in front of youtube.
Let This Mesmerize You- Even If You Saw It In 2010!
The whole 5:37 is a tribute to desire and expansion in a way that is SO REAL, I felt my heart soften and my smile widen while watching. My favorite sequence is the bra strip at 4:27- I can totally relate to the unleashing . Just watching her toss that thing aside and confidently stride forward made me want to whip mine off and toss it out the window!
I know this isn’t the first time an artist has stripped down to nothing for art’s sake but I feel deeply connected to Badu’s statement here, it feels like equal parts thrill and fear. This is a woman who could be any of us, feeling powerful and free in her body. Ready to show the world her raw desires. Loving herself and not giving a fuck. Oh and that beautiful booty!
“Beauty as Love”
Badu who is now the face of Givenchy (see image below) says in May’s Essence article “My mothers taught me about beauty, which is pretty close to what people would describe as love. Beauty looks like encouragement, patience, acceptance, forgiveness, carefulness and compassion. Beauty is spiritual and physical…but most of all, beauty starts with intention”. I couldn’t agree more.

My Intention Is To See Your Beauty
When I work I am taking what is most beautiful about you and reflecting it back through my lens. Doing my work feels like LOVE to me before, during and especially after a shoot when I get to show you the results of our session. My intention is to see your beauty and capture it’s power. The most common imagery we see day in and day out compares women to an unrealistic standard. Yet another reason Badu’s raw naked body (and BOOTY) felt amazing to watch stomping through Dallas. Let me know what you think about your own beauty in the comments below, I’d love to hear from you!
