I’m a woman who loves to photograph women. Over 20 years ago I began my career as a photo editor then studied photography with a number of male mentors before going out on my own. I first learned my craft by assisting male photographers, the majority (not all) of them started setting up a shoot by pointing out everything on the location that needed to be “fixed”. Then we’d usually have a private discussion about what was “wrong” with the subject. What I learned during this time was that the primary focus was on the perceived flaws in each situation.
Seeing The Awesome First
Before deciding to become a photographer I was working in the industry as a photo editor. It was my job to pull the best images from shoots I produced for various print projects. I was trained to look at hundreds of images and pick the best 10, 20, 40, etc.
I was always looking for what was FABULOUS FIRST, curating the best of the best with efficiency. Given that training and my natural optimism, primarily focusing on problems was not going to fly for me. I always saw what was most AWESOME first and thought about how to VIBE that up and downplay any distractions.
That’s How I Do It
20 years later and that’s still how my eye works, it’s my instinct and it feels right. When I shoot I’m looking to highlight your BEST features and make you feel good while I’m doing it. When I saw the new J’Lo video it made me think a lot about my initial experiences and women in general working in male dominated fields.
I Luh Ya Papi
Have you seen this?!??!??!? J’Lo is making a statement, in her J’Lo style but a big feminist statement any way you look at it.
In these 5 minutes of entertaining fantasy we get to see J’Lo’s perspective of how the male eye dictates her industry and how she FLIP’S IT! It’s also incredibly sensual with powerful female posturing and women having fun with their sexuality.
The New Feminism
Feminism is serious shit and it’s also about playing with our roles. This video reminds me that I am on the right path and keeps the reality of a new feminist vision alive in a way that makes me wanna D A N C E!!! I flip it like this every day at my studio, capturing women while they reveal what makes them feel whole and powerful. I Luh Ya J’Lo.
